Practical in Switzerland, mandatory abroad

If you are traveling abroad in a borrowed car, you must be able to prove in writing that the vehicle owner has given you permission to use it. Otherwise, there is a risk of tedious discussions and high fines. In Switzerland, written consent is only mandatory in exceptional cases. However, it can be helpful in situations such as a police check or an unplanned visit to the garage.
The benefits of an authorization
Clarity: The written consent of the vehicle owner prevents unnecessary discussions.
Fast onward journey: Any suspicion of theft of the vehicle can be dispelled immediately.
Relaxed traveling:
All necessary formalities are documented and verifiable.
Tip: Clarify the details of the insurance coverage before you use someone else's car.

What is set out in the authorization

The consent to use the vehicle should contain at least the following points:

  • Details of the car owner: Name, address and contact details of the vehicle owner
  • Details of the driver: Name, address and contact details of the person authorized to use the vehicle
  • Details of the vehicle: Make, model, license plate number and possibly the vehicle identification number
  • Period of use: Precise information on the place, time and duration of use

Depending on the situation, special terms of use, restrictions or insurance information may be added. For trips to Russia, Belarus or Ukraine, the authorization must also be certified by the municipality of residence or a notary.
