Return the leased car: please be aware of the following

You are delighted with your new leased vehicle – but then you receive an unexpected bill for the previous car. We explain how this can happen and what you should look out for when returning your leased vehicle.

Why do I get an invoice after the return?

When you return your leased vehicle to the garage, it will be repaired. The costs for this can be unexpectedly high. This is because many policyholders are not aware that there is a deductible for repairing the damage – even if the damage is only scratches. Depending on the amount of damage and the deductible, the bill can quickly amount to well over CHF 1,000. That is why it is worth thoroughly preparing for your vehicle return.

What do I need to bear in mind when for the return?

Ideally, you should prepare the vehicle return at least one month before the contract expires:

  • Inspect the vehicle
Check your car for visible damage and make a note of any defects. If you are insured by Zurich, one of our vehicle experts will be happy to do this for you free of charge – just give us a call.
  • Contact your insurance company
Even if you have minor damage, we recommend that you contact your insurance company at least four weeks before the lease agreement expires.
  • Gather documents
In addition to the vehicle key, you will also need these documents to return the leased vehicle:
    - Lease agreement
    - Maintenance and service documents
    - Owner's manual
    - Proof of repairs carried out
  • Check mileage
Check whether the number of kilometers agreed on in the lease agreement has been exceeded. If so, find out about the cost of extra kilometers and try to use the car less if necessary.
  • Appointment and return
Contact your leasing provider in good time to make an appointment and return the car on time. Failure to do so could result in additional costs.

As soon as the car has been inspected and returned, ask for a return report.

Assess damage: what is normal wear and tear?

Not every small scratch leads to surprising additional costs. Vehicles are supposed to be driven, and so there will be normal signs of wear and tear. In addition to minor scratches or dents, this also includes wear and tear on the tires and the interior (e.g. wear marks on the seats).

On the other hand, deep scratches and dents and damage caused by accidents or defects that impair the safety of the vehicle are not considered normal wear and tear. That is why additional costs may be incurred for these kinds of damage when the vehicle is returned.
