When is the Classic Car insurance suitable for me?

Additionally, you benefit from further optional services. These are specifically tailored to the needs of individuals who own a classic car – or even several. This way, you can be sure that your vehicle is optimally insured.

Do you have any questions about Classic Car insurance?

When is Classic Car insurance suitable for me?

The Classic Car insurance is suitable for you if you own a collector's vehicle: If your vehicle is at least 30 years old, it is considered a classic car or vintage vehicle and can be registered as a veteran vehicle under certain conditions. However, the Classic Car insurance is also recommended for your youngtimer if you own a special vehicle with collector's value. By the way, a car can be registered as a veteran vehicle if it was first registered at least 30 years ago, is only used privately, drives only about 2000-3000 km per year, and is generally in its original condition.

A motor vehicle liability insurance is legally required for every car that is at least occasionally on public roads. Because even on occasional outings, accidents can happen where property is damaged or even people are injured. Comprehensive insurance for your classic car or youngtimer is not mandatory, but highly recommended. This is because your collector's vehicle is something very special and if it gets damaged, repairs can quickly become costly – especially since suitable replacement parts for a historical one-of-a-kind vehicle are rare. In the event of theft, it is important that your vehicle is insured at market value so that you receive appropriate compensation in case of loss.

How much does insurance for a collector's vehicle cost and what is included in the coverage?

With our "Classic Car" insurance, you enjoy the same comprehensive coverage as with a traditional car insurance. Additionally, we offer you further automatically included or optional services that are specifically tailored to the needs of collector's vehicles. This way, you can be sure that you are receiving the best possible insurance coverage for your vehicle. The premium contribution depends on the individual scope of coverage and the market value of the insured vehicle or the extent of your vehicle fleet: If you own multiple classic cars, you can insure them with us under one contract.

How is the value of a youngtimer or classic car determined for insurance purposes and what value is insured?

The desired market value of the collector's vehicle to be insured must be contractually agreed upon, based on an expert assessment or appraisal. The assessment (appraisal) can be conducted with photos, documentation, any existing appraisals, and the desired value estimation of the owner. Alternatively, the vehicle can be inspected by a Zurich vehicle expert in certain cases or at the explicit request of the insured – we always find a good solution.

What is a veteran vehicle?

A vintage vehicle is not just a car, but a piece of contemporary history on four wheels. Vintage vehicles must meet some special criteria, essentially:

  • It must have been first registered over 30 years ago.
  • It can only be used privately and not for paid journeys or economic gain.
  • The annual mileage is limited to approximately 2000-3000 km.
  • The vehicle must be in its original condition and in good condition, with minor signs of use being acceptable.

Does Classic Car insurance offer me cover when travelling abroad?

Classic Car insurance covers damage occurring in Switzerland, the Principality of Liechtenstein, the countries of Europe and the Mediterranean rim and island states. Would you like to present your vehicle at international events? With the "Transport and exhibition" supplementary insurance, we can also extend the insurance cover for your classic vehicle to include transport and exhibitions.

How does the type of storage and transport of the classic car affect the insurance?

If your classic car is only driven occasionally, it is very important to store it in a suitable environment and to ensure that it is safe and properly packaged during transport to minimise the risk of damage. With our Classic Car insurance, we offer you additional insurance for mechanical damage (all-risk), parking damage and transport and exhibition cover. So you can enjoy your trips with your classic car without any worries.
